As we have started a new Science topic, Year 5 have been busy building on our knowledge and understanding about the anatomy of a flower that requires animal pollination. Last week, we explored how plants are adapted to ensure they are pollinated and thus can reproduce- we learned all about Strawberry plants and the runners that sprout to allow self reproduction!

This week, we took a closer look at a plant that requires animal pollination; a daffodil. Using our Scientific vocabulary such as anther, stigma and style, we dissected a daffodil to see the individual parts for ourselves. This meant we could use our BLP skills of noticing, absorption and capitalising to understand how each individual component helps the plant with its need for animal pollination in order to reproduce.

Our learning required us to pull from our long term memory and build upon our prior knowledge of plants as studied in Years 2 and 3. Luckily, we have been working hard on retrieval methods and we could use this knowledge to enable a deeper understanding in Year 5.

It was a fabulous lesson in which we were all engrossed in the task at hand, we were amazed to see we could locate the ovary and ovules through careful and Scientific dissection.
