Year 5 have been busy developing our Science Investigation skills this week. Our Science theme is all about the properties of materials. Last week we looked at how some substances are soluble (which means they dissolve in water to form a solution) or insoluble.
Our experiment this week was to see how we could separate mixtures using different techniques. We had mixtures such as a salt water solution, flour and raisins, rice and paper clips as well as rice and flour. In groups we had to select our equipment and discuss how we could separate our mixtures into their individual components.
We learned about the process of filtration to separate salt and water as well as how we can use evaporation too- which we could link to our prior learning on the Water Cycle.
We discovered that the best way to separate flour and raisins was to use a sieve because the flour particles are much smaller and will pass through the sieve leaving the raisins behind.
It was great to use our BLP skills of noticing and absorption to become more competent and knowledgeable Scientists!
