This week Year 5 have been developing an understanding of Viking history through our Theme lesson and reading our Theme reader ‘Riddle of the Runes’

We have our own box of runes which we have spent time exploring, trying to think what they could mean before resorting to the internet and non-fiction books to aid our discoveries.

The Vikings did not use the alphabet as we do today. They had their own symbols which could be used as letters OR words OR phrases, making it easier to send encrypted messages between groups.

This will help us work alongside our intrepid heroine Alva as both she and her Uncle Magnus attempt to solve the riddle and find the missing Monks and their treasures!

What do YOU think the runes mean?

    Simple.
Almost all symbols represent the individual letters of Brahmi script of ancient India ( various types) including Harappan Brahmi.
